A Little Time Could Save You Lots of Money

Winterizing the exterior of your home may not be something you have ever thought about doing, especially if you have vinyl siding. However, making sure your home is ready for any inclement weather may be a good way to save yourself a lot of time, money and stress in the coming year.

To begin with, it is a good idea to make sure the exterior of your home is clean and free from dirt and debris. By removing the dirt, your siding will have the ability to shed water, snow and ice more efficiently avoiding any moisture damage that could occur. This may also help avoid ice build-up that can get in between your siding and cause it to separate or crack.

Doing a thorough walk around and checking your vinyl siding for cracks and damage is also a good idea when you are headed into winter. Cracks in your siding create an opening for moisture to get underneath where the water can cause rotting and mold growth. If the damage goes for a period of time without repair, the problem can spread causing costly repairs.

While you are doing your winter inspection, it is a good idea to remove any hoses that are attached to the house. When the weather gets cold, if your hoses are still attached, the ice may crack your hose bib and the pipe that extends into the home. When your house has vinyl siding, a cracked pipe may remain unnoticed for quite a while and water may enter your home before you even realize you have a problem.

While it may not seem like it is something to add to the top of your priority list, winterizing the outside of your home does not take very long and could save you lots of money due to damage in the future. A little time could save you a lot of stress.
